Westshore Marina District lands urban grocer
A boutique grocer that got its start in downtown Tampa has signed a deal in the Westshore Marina District.
Duckweed Urban Market, which has locations in the central business district, Channel district, Seminole Heights and is looking at sites in Orlando, will take 3,000 square feet in the Westshore Marina District, the developer, BTI Partners, said Tuesday.
Construction on the retail space is underway, BTI said. Duckweed will open in early 2020.
It will sell groceries, craft beer and liquors with a focus on specialty and artisan items.
Lauren Campbell, a broker with Hybridge Commercial Real Estate in Tampa, represented Duckweed in the transaction.
A market has been long been part of the vision for the retail portion of Westshore Marina District. BTI has said that it wants to create an urban, walkable environment within the district, which spans 52 acres just off of Westshore and Gandy boulevards.
“Duckweed is a great example of the type of retailers we are attracting to Westshore Marina District,” said Britney Mroczkowski, vice president of retail development, said in a statement. “Duckweed in downtown Tampa has been a complete success and we want to bring that experience to our community. Our tenants will give South Tampa residents a good reason to go out, socialize and have a fun time.”
Beyond retail leasing, the residential component of the district is also in full swing.
Apartments from two different developers — Bainbridge and Related Group — have opened recently, and WCI is about to begin closing on its townhouses in the district. BTI says it has pre-sold 40 of 120 units in its high-end condo tower, Marina Pointe, and plans to break ground later this year.
