The Selmon Expressway West Extension opened on Monday, April 19, promising to ease commutes between Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. The Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority estimated the new route would divert approximately 40% of traffic from congested Gandy Boulevard.
Local businesses, while hopeful about the completion, had weathered three years of construction challenges. The initiative included the “Shop Gandy” program, partnering with area chambers of commerce to support the estimated 170 businesses in the corridor during construction disruption.
